"Where Can I Give Birth in Leeds?" Your Birth Options Explained

Updated: Mar 14

During your midwife booking appointment, one of the first big questions you’ll likely be asked is: “Where would you like to give birth?”

Where you choose to give birth may be one of the biggest influences on your birth experience. That’s why it’s so important to explore all of your options, ask questions and make the choice that feels right for you.

You may have been told that due to certain risk factors it’s recommended that you give birth on a labour ward. However, it’s important to know that you still have the legal right to choose where you give birth in the UK. Your birth location is ultimately your decision.

In this blog we’ll explore the main birth options available in Leeds, including labour wards, midwifery unit and home birth.

What Are My Birth Options in Leeds?

If you live in Leeds, you have the following choices when it comes to where to give birth:

  • A hospital labour ward

  • A midwifery unit

  • Home birth with NHS midwives

  • Home birth with a private or independent midwife

  • Free birth

Each of the above offers different environments, types of care and pain relief options.

Should I Give Birth on a Labour Ward in Leeds?

In Leeds there are two hospital labour wards you may choose from:

  • St James's University Hospital (locally referred to as Jimmys)

  • Leeds General Infirmary (LGI)

Hospital labour wards (or delivery suites) are where the majority of babies in the UK are born.

These units have access to obstetricians, anaesthetists, surgical teams and the full range of medical equipment, which means they are the place where assisted births and caesarean births take place.

What Do I Need to Know About Giving Birth on a Labour Ward?

Here are some things to consider:

Labour wards can feel busier and more clinical

Hospitals tend to be noisier environments with more staff coming in and out. However, it can still be possible to create a calm space. Many people bring music, fairy lights, affirmations or essential oils to help create a more homely environment.

Intervention rates are higher for low-risk births

Studies have found that for women with low-risk pregnancies, giving birth on a labour ward increases the likelihood of medical interventions such as instrumental birth or caesarean birth, compared with birth centres or home birth.

The last time Leeds Teaching Hospitals published their statistics was May 2024 and showed the following:

  • Vaginal births 49%

  • Emergency Caesarean 21%

  • Elective Caesarean Section 15%

  • Assisted vaginal birth 15%

All pain relief options are available

This includes:

  • Epidural

  • Gas and air

  • Pethidine or diamorphine

If you are planning to use water as pain relief, it’s important to know that birth pools are not always available on the labour wards.

Full medical teams are available

If complications arise, obstetricians and neonatal teams are already on site.

What Is the Lotus Suite in Leeds?

Another option available in Leeds is the Lotus Midwifery Unit (known locally as the Lotus Suite) located within Leeds General Infirmary. The Lotus Suite is a midwife-led unit, meaning care is provided entirely by midwives rather than obstetric doctors. It’s an alongside midwifery unit, which means it’s located on the same corridor as the hospital’s delivery suite. If medical care is required, transfer to the labour ward can happen quickly.

What Do I Need to Know About Giving Birth on the Lotus Suite?

Here are some things to consider:

There may be eligibility criteria

Birth centres are usually recommended for people with low-risk pregnancies, so it’s important to have conversations with your midwife if you would like to give birth here. Even if you’re initially told the Lotus Suite isn’t recommended, you can ask questions, discuss the reasoning and explore your choices with your care team.

Research shows birth centres are very safe

For low-risk, first-time mothers, midwife-led birth centres are the safest place to give birth. They are also shown to be very safe for second and subsequent births.

The environment is designed for physiological birth

The rooms are set up as a 'home from home' decorated with birth affirmations, mood lighting, music systems and aromatherapy diffusers. The rooms are quieter and have more space to move around.

Pain relief options are different to labour ward

There are fewer options for medical pain relief but you will have better access to a birth pool and more options for being active during labour. Available pain relief options include:

  • Gas and air

  • Pethidine or diamorphine

  • Water immersion

If you decide you would like an epidural, you would usually need to transfer to the labour ward.

Can I Choose a Home Birth in Leeds?

Yes! Everyone has the option to give birth at home. Home birth can offer a familiar and comfortable environment where you feel relaxed, safe and unobserved.

If you are considering a home birth in Leeds, you may be supported by the Lotus Home Birth Team. These midwives also work on the Lotus Suite at the hospital. However, it is important to be aware that the home birth service in Leeds is often suspended due to Lotus midwives being needed in the hospital or when staffing levels are low.

You could choose to hire a private or independent midwife if that feels right for you. A private midwife can often provide a higher level of support and continuity of care that may not be available through the NHS. This may also be a more reliable option if you are planning a home birth and want to avoid the possibility of the Lotus midwives being unavailable or arriving late to your birth.

What do I need to know about giving birth at home?

Here are some things to consider:

You can have the birth you want at home

You have control over your birth environment, all your own home comforts and multiple rooms to choose from. You can choose who is present at your birth, ensuring you are surrounded by people you trust. If you would like to labour or birth in water, you can hire or buy a birth pool and not have to rely on one being available at the hospital.

You are more likely to have a spontaneous vaginal birth

Research into home birth has found that for most women birthing at home they are 45% less likely to have a c-section and 50% less likely to have an instrumental birth.

Medical pain relief options are more limited

Home births are linked to reduced need for medical pain relief, but if you decide you want medical pain relief you can transfer to hospital. Common options for pain relief at home include: TENS machine, water immersion, gas and air, breathing techniques, affirmations, aromatherapy, changing positions.

Hospital transfer is available if needed

If a transfer to hospital is required, this usually happens via ambulance. Midwives are highly trained to recognise complications early and ensure you and your baby remain safe.

You can change your mind at any time

If you plan a home birth but decide during labour that you’d prefer to be in hospital, you can transfer to hospital at any point.

Can I Give Birth Outside of Leeds?

Yes, you’re not limited to hospitals within Leeds. Some hospitals in nearby areas include:

  • Harrogate District Hospital

  • Bradford Royal Infirmary

  • Airedale General Hospital

  • Pinderfields Hospital

  • Calderdale Royal Hospital

It can sometimes be helpful to look at travel distance, birth statistics and facilities when exploring options outside your immediate area.

Can I Change My Mind About Where I Give Birth?

Absolutely. Your birth plan, including where you plan to give birth, can change at any point during pregnancy or labour. The most important thing is that you feel safe, informed and supported in your decision. This is your baby, your body and your birth.

Can I Have a Doula Present at my Birth in Leeds?
